What is popular culture?
Popular culture usually refers to the newly emerged culture in a region, community or country, which is believed and accepted by the public. It is the product of mass society and is often spread through mass cultural media. For example, novels, best sellers, pop music, TV dramas, films and advertisements all belong to the category of mass culture.
What popular culture do you consume?
The popular culture I personally choose to consume is film and music. I believe that from the invention of film to the popularity of film, film has a different impact on each generation, but in my opinion, film is like a mirror, which can reflect the other side of itself. Movies can kill time and make boring time pass faster. Entertain yourself and relax. Get comfort in the illusion of film and television, so as to meet the inner desire. Movies are life. For example, there are many types of movies, regardless of romance, action, sadness, joy and family. Ethics, science fiction, even variety shows and documentaries can find corresponding emotional sustenance in their own life. Everyone’s life is different, so they have different views on movies. The essence of any content expressed in any form is the same. My favorite movie is the godfather, which is about a man’s family, responsibility, loyalty and social evil, how to rationally and calmly use his wisdom to deal with people in society, and how to be his own master to change or dominate his destiny and status in society when he is unfairly treated. In my opinion, this is a movie that a man must watch.
In my opinion, music is a way of communication regardless of national boundaries, skin color and language. It is an art form that uses sound to express emotion and real life. It can be regarded as a language to let the audience feel the thought and mood the author wants to express when creating this music, and resonate with the author at the same time. Really good music will not pass because of time, and even become more valuable with the passage of time. For example, Michael Jackson’s dangerous, earth song and other works, even after his death, he is still respected by the masses. His music has a great social impact, so it can also show that the influence of music on the masses is contagious.(Miller 2014)
Explain its popularity using one of the key theories introduced this week?
Representation is very important in mass media, because the representative media culture in social networks is representative, so that people all over the world can receive important news at the first time and understand the changes in the world and the occurrence of major news events.(Cranny-Francis 1994, p. ) for example The global times is an international news newspaper sponsored and published by the people’s daily, an organ of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. It was founded in January 1993. Its original name was “global literature”, and it was renamed “Global Times” in 1997. On April 20, 2009, the English edition of global times was launched, which is the second English comprehensive newspaper issued nationwide in China. It is also the only newspaper media to convey comprehensive news in line with China’s basic national conditions abroad.
