What is cancellation culture?
Cancel culture, also known as call-out culture, is a modern phenomenon that refers to the practice of publicly calling out and shaming individuals or organizations for behavior deemed unacceptable or offensive. It often involves boycotting or otherwise ostracizing the person or group, in an attempt to hold them accountable for their actions.
The reasons for canceling someone can vary widely, from controversial statements or actions to more serious offenses such as harassment or discrimination. Cancel culture is often driven by social media, where individuals and groups can quickly mobilize to demand accountability from those who have caused offense.
Critics of cancel culture argue that it can be overly punitive, relying on public shaming rather than constructive dialogue to effect change. Proponents argue that it is an important tool for holding people and organizations accountable for their actions and for creating a more inclusive and just society.
The elimination of culture supports the forces of social justice
I believe everyone has seen the classic Hollywood movie “Gone with the Wind”, which is adapted from the novel “Gone with the Wind”. It tells the story of the heroine’s personal emotional entanglement in the context of the great era after the outbreak of the Civil War in the United States. However, the film content has played a negative guiding role in the description of black slavery and the worsening of racism. For example, the black maid in the movie is still willing to be a slave even after the abolition of slavery in the United States, and also refers to the former master as the word “master”. “Gone with the Wind” portrays a series of images of black slaves, including Polk, the first black slave in Tara Manor, and later purchased Polk’s wife, Dilcey, as well as Dilcey’s daughter, Prissy, and of course, the intimate slave of the famous mother, Scarlett’s mother. These characters are not insignificant supporting role. They have different endowments and personalities; The novel also meticulously draws a distinction between black slaves who are called in the house and black slaves who work in the field – the former deserving more respect, and the latter being rough servants – suggesting that if this distinction is not clear, it would be rude to accuse the southern plantations of oppressing black slaves. In general, the novel’s attitude towards black slaves can be reflected in this sentence: “Black slaves sometimes make people very angry, and they are stupid and lazy, but their loyalty to their masters is truly priceless.” Combining the context of the time, the film is suspected of glorifying the slavery system in the United States, as well as factors that discriminate against the black race. So this movie led to the removal of HBO Max from the platform.
Cancellation of culture is a resistance to the forces of social justice
As is well known, Columbus was a great man who created many achievements.
He crossed the Atlantic Ocean, and his voyage ushered in a new era of exploration and colonization in the Americas. Between 1492 and 1504, he made four voyages to America, and discovered a new continent that Europeans had never known before. His achievements increased Europeans’ understanding of time, and Columbus’s voyage helped expand Europeans’ understanding of the world, introducing new crops and animals to Europe. “It has contributed to economic growth and cultural exchanges between Europe and the Americas, but it is worth noting that his routes have had a significant impact on the indigenous peoples of the Americas:” colonization, forced labor, and the prevalence of diseases that have led to a significant reduction in population. “
He caused the establishment of Spanish colonies. These colonies laid the foundation for Spain’s further colonization and expansion in the New World, laying the groundwork for the fiery aquatic life of the local people of the late Americas, and for this reason, Columbus was also pushed to the apex of the debate. The people of Europe consider him a hero in discovering the new continent and a pioneer in the construction of the world’s territory. The colonized people regarded him as a nightmare, a symbol of colonialism and oppression.
In June 2020, due to the prevalence of cancellation culture, many angry protesters sank a statue of Columbus into a lake in Richmond, Virginia. In the second half of 2020, the United States continued to witness the destruction of six other Columbus statues. “The warrior whom mankind has long admired, unfortunately degenerated into a brutal colonialist and racist demon in this year due to the emergence of the abolition of culture.”
